State-of-the-Art Technical Integration Brings Public Benefits to San Francisco City Hall

• New technology doesn’t disturb the historical character of the well-loved building.

• If a citizen can’t attend a supervisors’ meeting or a committee meeting in person, the city’s Channel 54 can broadcast most meetings live, gavel to gavel, from 5 of the rooms.

• A bi-telephone system in the supervisors’ chambers allows the public to watch a meeting at home and then call-in and comment on scheduled and agenda issues.

• Provisions for “broadcasting” supervisors meetings on the World Wide Web are in place, and will be implemented by the city in the near future.

• Modern presentation technology installed in the supervisors’ chambers and in committee and hearing rooms allows the public to make effective visual presentations. For instance, graphics can be scanned at the lectern, and reprocessed for broadcast coverage.

• Computerized procedures and simplified meeting notifications improve staff efficiency. Innovative remote control technology will automatically notify all of the city’s commission members when a meeting has been scheduled. The same technology streamlines meeting flow by computerizing voting, communication with clerks and aides, and supervisors’ requests to be recognized on the floor.

• For the first time in recent history, all of the commissions and board committees can meet in one location. Suitable meeting spaces for all the commissions and board committees have been integrated into the building. The two large Light Courts have been designed to act as overflow rooms for committee meetings and can accommodate microphones, video screens and speakers so that those in the overflow rooms can pose questions and voice their opinions.

• The infrastructure allows for video conferencing and satellite hookups, so the buildings can be used for international or worldwide conferences.

• The installed fiber optic infrastructure is open-ended, providing for future upgrade potential and installation of new, as yet uninvented technologies.
